Educational needs
Cardiomyopathies are complex diseases. Knowledge has been growing in the last decades, in part due to the enormous advances in imaging and genetics. These conditions are expressed by varied cardiac phenotypes, sometimes overlapping or mixed, and are a frequent cause of heart failure, arrhythmias, and sudden death. Cardiomyopathies are difficult to diagnose and often have a genetic cause. Due to their complexity and heterogeneity these conditions require clinical knowledge in several medical domains. They are a cutting-edge area in terms of molecular and pathophysiological research, with some entities fitting ideal translational models. The knowledge of cardiomyopathies regarding the mechanisms involved in their development and progression is increasing, as are the diagnostic methods and new therapeutic agents able to control the natural history of these diseases, or even to prevent disease development. It is challenging to keep updated in the continuous evolution of the knowledge in this field. How to diagnose and manage, how to choose the best candidates for new or specific therapies, how to follow patients and their affected relatives, these are some of the educational needs regarding the clinical approach of patients with cardiomyopathies, which are frequently stated by cardiologists and internal medicine specialists. This LEE aims to provide up-to-date knowledge and practical training in the field.

Target audience
Medical specialists, in particular cardiologists and internal medicine specialists.

Learning objectives
After attending the Course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify a possible cardiomyopathy regarding phenotypes
  • Know the current classifications and their utility in practice
  • Apply workflows for a possible specific diagnosis, and how to proceed thereafter
  • Be aware of the role and rules of genetic testing (utility vs futility or when and why to perform, and by whom)
  • Have increased knowledge about the most common cardiomyopathies, and identify possible red-flags for a specific diagnosis
  • Diagnose, evaluate, how to follow, and current treatment options regarding patients with specific cardiomyopathies (hypertrophic sarcomeric CM, dilated CM, arrhythmogenic CM, Fabry´s, amyloidosis, non-compaction).
  • Detect and manage rare cardiomyopathies
  • Be aware of the role of myocardial biopsy
  • Gain increased knowledge regarding bench to bedside pathways in sarcomeric cardiomyopathies
  • Gain insights regarding novel therapies, including gene editing.

Course structure
Two-days course (a total of 21 hours of contact – net time), from 8:00 to 18:00 (on the 1st day) and from, 8:30 to 19:30 (on the 2nd day), plus 8 hours of study (non-presential).

Learning material (full published papers in high-standard scientific medical journals, selected by the faculty and supervised by the scientific committee) will be provided electronically to learners one month before the beginning of the course.

The course includes 14 hours of theoretical learning plus 5h of tutorials (hands-on) distributed by two days. On hands-on tutorials, learners are divided in two groups rotating by two sessions/day (each with presentation /discussion of two clinical cases with different cardiomyopathies). These interactive sessions include a total of eight different cases presentations during the course.

Sufficient time for Discussion and Q&A is programmed after each lecture and during hands-on sessions.

There will be a pre-course survey (knowledge survey of participants) on the beginning of the 1st day that will be repeated at the end of the 2nd day (post-course), to get insights regarding educational outcomes.

Learners’ attendance will be monitored by own-handwritten signature in a specific form, during each session. The hands-on sessions will be restricted to a number of eighty (80) learners. The total number of participants will be 120.
A certificate of attendance will be issued, with the number of European CME Credits obtained according to the previous evaluation by UEMS-EACCME®

Learners are expected to provide feedback on the LEE and the FML will submit to UEMS-EACCME® the event report based on the learners’ feedback.
